The Press Council in BiH is organizing the discussion as part of the project “Media and Public Credibility” in the shape of a Focus Group titled “Transparency of Media Ownership and Financing in BiH”, which will be held on Friday, December 14, 2018 in Brcko, hotel Jelena, starting at 12:00.

The goal of this Focus Group is to identify problems arising from the lack of a law on transparency of media ownership, media financing and media advertising in BiH, as well as for journalists to share their experiences in this regard, when their professional and independent performance of duty was affected.

The discussion will be attended by editors, journalists, representatives from the academic community and civil society.

Problems identified until now include:

In November 2017 the Report on Transparency of Media Ownership and Media Financing was presented. It included an overview of current regulations in the World and our Region, as well as a proposal of substantial recommendations to advance the legislative framework and policies in BiH. These analysis and recommendations are the basis for expert, open and focused discussion amongst the professional media community and policy makers, with the goal of developing the draft legislature on transparency of media ownership and media financing.

The Focus Group will be realized within the project “Media and Public Credibility”, implemented by the consortium of four organizations in BiH, with support of the EU Delegation in BiH: The Press Council in BiH, Media Center, JaBiHuEU and the BH Journalists Association. The project aims to prepare the legislative framework for regulating transparent media ownership, media financing and advertising in BiH. These areas are of special importance for the freedom of expression, protection of journalists and the prevention of pressure against media and journalists, stemming from political and financial motives. The project also follows the standards of transparency of media ownership and media pluralism, as well as the protection of the values of the journalism profession and public credibility.
