The Press Council in BiH, the self-regulatory body in BiH, is organizing a gathering of editors and journalists from online media in BiH, at the Expert Debate titled “Challenges of Online Media - Protection of Professionalism and Survival”.

On January 15 and 16, 2019, at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Sarajevo, through expert debate and mutual dialogue, professionals from the media community, together with members from the Press Council, will explain the problems they face in their work due to the threats against and the devaluation of the journalism profession and ethical coverage, constant and ever increasing violation of copyrights, the stealing of articles and photographs, the spread of hate speech and inciting rhetoric, as well as the serious material threat caused by the increasingly present unregistered and anonymous portals.

During the debate on hate speech, the results of the Press Council’s campaign “STOP! Hate Speech” will be presented, which monitored and moderated visitor comments on seven (7) online media, in the period 17.08 - 17.11.2018, as well as examples hate speech cases from the European Court for human rights in Strasbourg.

The question always raised is - how to protect the freedom of speech, and prevent hate speech? - will be addressed, along with the vast examples of threats that online media commentators issue to portal editors when they delete and remove content containing hate speech from their portals.

The goal of this expert debate is to, with the help of the members of the Press Council, define a potential common stance and action the professional online media can take to solve these problems, bearing in mind the common interest, protection of the journalism profession and survival of professional online media.

In addition to the debate, the Complaints Commission of the Press Council in BiH will hold an extraordinary session, where it will address the worrying increase in the cases of violations of ethics standards in media content and in political manipulation and influence on editorial policy, which are obviously reflected in editorial content of certain media.  Also addressed will be the problem of the appearance of unregistered portals - portals without a cite notice, contact or identification information, addressing to what extent are such portals endangering the online media community in BiH professionally and economically.
