THE PRESS COUNCIL IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
is organizing The Public Campaign
“Citizens and Journalists together in the Fight for Truth” May 3rd, 2017
11 cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Press Council in BiH, in cooperation with the Youth News Association in BiH (ONAuBiH), on occasion of May 3rd - World Media Freedom Day, is organizing the Public Campaign “Citizens and Journalists together in the Fight for Truth”. The Public Campaign will be realized on May 3rd, 2016, in 11 cities in BiH: Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar, Tuzla, Zenica, Pale, Breza, Gorazde, Trebinje, Orasje and Srebrenik.
The purpose of the Public Campaign “Citizens and Journalists together in the Fight for Truth” is to inform the public about the state of media freedom in BiH, the ever reoccurring attacks on journalists, and about the citizens’ right to submit complaints regarding unprofessional and inaccurate media coverage to the Press Council in BiH.
Volunteers of the local ONAuBiH teams will inform the citizens at info-stands in central city zones about their right to complaint about inaccurate and unprofessional coverage of the press and online media, by explaining to them the complaints procedure of the Press Council in BiH. During the campaign, a survey will be conducted on the state of media freedom in BiH and the respect of the citizens’ rights to accurate and professionally placed information, while Press Codes of BiH will also be handed out.
In 2016, the Press Council in BiH received 461 complaints, from which 361 relate to the coverage of the press and online media, and 100 to internet portal visitor comments. Since the beginning of 2017, the Press Council in BiH received 98 complaints from citizens about the coverage of the press and online media, out of which 46 relate to internet portal visitor comments. Out of the total number of complaints received, 39 were resolved through self-regulation, namely by the publication of denials, reactions, corrections or apologies, or by the removal of comments containing hate speech, incitement or discrimination. Despite the increasing threats to media freedom and the pressure on the work of media, the large number of complaints resolved through self-regulation shows that printed and online media in BiH are increasingly accepting media self-regulation.
The Public Campaign Citizens and Journalists together in the Fight for Truth” will be realized in: Banja Luka, Mostar, Sarajevo, Tuzla, Zenica, Pale, Breza, Gorazde, Trebinje, Orasje and Srebrenik.
The campaign is supported by: the National Endowment for Democracy and Civil Rights Defenders.
