TO THE POLICE RAID AND BLOCKADE OF THE EDITORIAL STAFF OF KLIX.BA
Today’s police attack on the editorial staff of the portal klix.ba
was an attack on the publics’ right to know and to be informed!
Such an act, of the worst kind of pressure on the freedom of information and media freedom, is a direct attempt of deterring journalists from publishing information in the public’s interest and sends a message of what will happen to any media who publishes in the public’s interest.
With full support for the editorial staff and journalists of the portal klix.ba - the Press Council in BiH sharply condemns the suppression of the freedom of information in the public’s interest, by the criminal police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of RS and the Sarajevo Canton, which invaded, raided and completely blocked the work of the portal klix.ba
The Directors of the portal klix.ba, Dario and Mario Simic, the Editor in Chief, Jasmin Hadziahmetovic and Journalist Edita Gorinjac, where isolated in the redaction offices for the entire day, and prevented from contacting their colleague journalists. In addition, other klix journalists were prevented from being in the editorial offices and performing regular work, while a ban on publishing information about the raid was also issued!
Such an unprecedented attack on media freedom and endangerment of the freedom of expression, as well as the treatment of the klix journalists by the police, is intolerable in a society that considers itself democratic, and is the behavior of a police state and dictator regime.
Due to the video footage, recently published by the portal klix.ba, where Zeljka Cvijanovic speaks about purchases of votes in the National Assembly of RS, upon a court order of the Municipal Court of Sarajevo, the criminal police has during the entire day performed a raid of the editorial offices of klix.ba, and seized laptops, hard drives, CDs, USB stick, office material and even journalists’ private phones.
Instead of dealing with the problem to which this media pointed by publishing the footage - the possible purchases of votes for the purpose of obtaining a parliamentary majority in the National Assembly of RS, the police, with the court’s approval, treats the portal klix.ba journalists as criminals.
Such an act, of the worst kind of pressure on the freedom of information and media freedom, is a direct attempt of deterring journalists from publishing information in the public’s interest and sends a message of what will happen to any media who publishes in the public’s interest. This should not be allowed.
Journalists and media, through the Law on Protection against Defamation, the Criminal Codes of BiH, the Press Code of BiH, and all recommendations and declarations on freedom of media coverage and expression given by the Council of Europe, have the full right to protect their source of information and to publish this information in the public’s interest.
Today’s police attack on the editorial staff of the portal klix.ba is an attack on the public’s right to know and be informed!
