THE PRESS COUNCIL IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
APPEAL FOR MEDIA
TO COVER THE CITIZENS' PROTESTS IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
ACCURATELY, FAIRLY AND OBJECTIVELY
The Press Council in BiH, the self-regulatory body for print and online media, hereby issues an APPEAL FOR MEDIA
to abide by professional journalism standards, which foresee accurate, fair and objective coverage in covering the current citizens' protests and socio-political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thus they will prevent the spread of disinformation, manipulation of public opinion and the spread of panic, fear and a general sense of citizens' insecurity.
Manipulative coverage and deception of the public through false information are the coarsest breaches of news coverage, resulting in immense consequences that such information can have in such a sensitive time, which Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently going through.
Only by respecting the professional and ethical standards, the media can fulfill their democratic role in society, and the citizens can realize their right to true information.
The Press Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina reminds media about the General Provisions of the Press Code of BiH, which foresee that Journalists have an obligation to the public to maintain high ethical standards at all times and under all circumstances. It is the duty of journalists and publishers of print and online media to respect the needs of citizens for useful, timely and relevant information.
While fully respecting the principles of media freedom and freedom of editorial policy, and understanding the role of media as one of the pillars of democracy, the Press Council in BiH appeals for compliance with the Press Code of BiH, Article 1 - Public Interest, which defines public interest as “the procedure and/or information which has the intention of helping the public create personal opinions and decisions about issues and events, including the efforts to detect criminal and/or civil offenses, and to prevent seduction of the public by certain statements or actions of individuals or organizations.”
The Press Council in BiH also reminds about the provisions of Article 5 - Accuracy and Fair Reporting, of the Press Code of BiH, which amongst other things foresees that “Journalists shall not publish inaccurate or misleading material in the form of pictures, texts or other materials. In reporting and commenting controversy, it is the journalists’ professional duty to present all sides in the conflict.”
