THE PRESS COUNCIL IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
REGARDING THE PUBLIC CALL FOR THE MURDER OF PHD PROFESSOR RESID HAFIZOVIC
The Press Council in BiH condemns the abuse of the freedom of speech on social networks
The Press Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the self-regulatory body for print and online media, condemns the death threats targeting PhD Professor Resid Hafizovic made on Facebook. Unfortunately, this case confirms that the basic human right to freedom of speech and expression is abused in Bosnia and Herzegovina, by irresponsible individuals.
The threatening content was published on Facebook. In this case, numerous media published the news about the existence of a Facebook page with the threatening content, thus informing the public, as well as the responsible police and prosecution authorities, about the abuse of social networks.
The Press Council in BiH is the self-regulatory body that enables submission of complaints to the writings of print and online media. Social networks are not within the mandate of the Press Council in BiH and they are not subject to self-regulation.
The position of the Press Council in BiH is that the responsible prosecutorial and police agencies need to react, find and sanction the person who called for the murder of PhD Professor Resid Hafizovic by publically offering a cash reward.
The Press Council in BiH reminds about Article 10 of the European Convention on Protection of Human Rights and Essential Freedoms, which guarantees everyone their right to freedom of expression, but also warns that exercising these freedoms implies obligations and responsibilities.
The Press Council in BiH is committed to its mission of strengthening professionalism, ethics standards of media reporting, the fight against hate speech in media, as well as providing the possibility for citizens to realize their right to accurate, objective and current information.
