REACTION TO THE BRUTAL ATTACK ON JOURNALIST VLADIMIR KOVACEVIC

Solidarity with the journalists, insisting that the police and prosecution identify and punish the perpetrators who intimidate and attack journalists,

and the fight for free journalism, is the fight of every citizen for themselves and their freedom!
The savage suffocation of journalistic freedoms opens the door for the suffocation of democracy and the regime, which is something no one of us in Bosnia and Herzegovina wants.

The Board of Directors of the Press Council harshly condemns the brutal, savage attack and endangerment to the life of our colleague journalist Vladimir Kovacevic.  This attack is utterly threatening also in view of the array of numerous verbal and physical attacks against journalists, which took place recently.

Through such treatment of journalists, Bosnia and Herzegovina is sending a dangerous pre-electoral message of the utmost rude attempt at quieting and intimidating of journalists who strive to present the public with truth and facts without manipulation.

Monitoring the citizens’ comments on the web-portals under the articles that reported about the murder attempt of our colleague Kovacevic, the monitors of the Press Council read in disbelief tens of calls for battering and murder of journalists, raping of female journalists and liking what happened, blaming the journalists for everything that is wrong in the land. Such atmosphere of an utterly wrong stance towards the journalists and their responsible and very important call of promoting the truth, are the result, amongst other things, and message sent by some of the public servants on a regular basis, where they unequivocally encourage the silencing of journalists regardless of the method employed.

The Press Council  appeals to all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina not to succumb to such manipulation and to realize that their freedom, the freedom of their children and the land where they live depends on the extent to which the journalists are free to write the truth without repercussions.

Freedom of expression is a democratic value, as is the freedom of professional and responsible journalism.  Abusing the freedom of expression in order to choke the freedom of journalistic coverage, is a mindless act of suffocating his or her free life in BiH for every citizen doing it.

Solidarity with the journalists, insisting that the police and prosecution identify and punish the perpetrators who intimidate and attack journalists and the fight for free journalism, is the fight of every citizen for themselves and their freedom!

The savage suffocation of journalistic freedoms opens the door for the suffocation of democracy and the regime, which is something no one of us in Bosnia and Herzegovina wants.
