APPEAL TO JOURNALISTS AND EDITORS, 19.05.2018

APPEAL TO JOURNALISTS AND EDITORS, 19.05.2018

THE COMPLAINTS COMMISSION OF THE PRESS COUNCIL IN BIH

    APPEALS TO MEDIA

Considering the citizens' complaints about media coverage in the past two months, the Complaints Commission of the Press Council in BiH observed an array of misconceptions and unprofessionalism in the majority of articles about migrants, published in the press and online media in Bosnia and Hercegovina.

In this regard the Complaints Commission Appeals to editors and journalists, reminding them of the obligation to professional and responsible coverage in the public interest, in accordance with the Press Code of BiH.

Coverage on migrants and the migrant crisis is of the public interest.

The Press Council in BiH encourages journalists and the media to report and publish stories on migrants and the migrant crisis in BiH, reminding them that such coverage needs to be in-depth, namely treating the problem in a more explanatory context, responsibly and objectively.

Unfortunately, the majority of coverage so far treated the topic in a superficial, unprofessional and sensationalistic manner, generalizing the problem and presenting it biasedly. Generalizing all migrants on the basis of presenting criminal deeds of individuals is unacceptable

It is important to note that there are various categories amongst those people: refugees, migrants, human trafficking victims, as well as persons of security interest.

It is in the public interest that journalists have a layered approach and respect this complexity of distinguishing when reporting, as well that they avoid objectification and dehumanization of persons who they report about. Media reports need to be viewed from all aspects: humanitarian, security, social, health, political, corruption, criminal, etc.

Otherwise, sensationalistic and biased reporting incites panic amongst citizens, fear and animosity towards the migrant population in BiH and can cause negative and unwanted consequences.
