    May 3rd, 2015

The Press Council in BiH, in cooperation with the Youth News Association in BiH (ONAuBiH), on occasion of May 3rd - World Media Freedom Day, successfully realized the Public Campaign “Citizens and Journalists together in the Fight for the Truth”.

Representatives of the Press Council in BiH and volunteers of the Local ONAuBiH teams informed citizens in 29 cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina about their right to complain about inaccurate and unprofessional media coverage, as well as explain the complaints procedure of the Press Council in BIH. Within the Campaign, a survey of 1,000 citizens was conducted on the state of media freedom in BiH and the respect of the citizens’ rights to accurate and professionally placed information. The survey results will be published on the web site of the Press Council in BiH - www.vzs.ba.

In 2014, the Press Council in BiH received a total of 875 complaints, while since the start of 2015 it has received 79 complaints regarding the coverage of the press and online media, out of which 11 regard comments of internet portal visitors. Out of the total of complaints received this year, 40 were resolved through self-regulation, i.e. through publications of denials, reactions, corrections or apologies, or through removal of comments containing hate speech, incitement or discrimination. Despite the ever increasing pressures against the freedom of information and the work of media, the large number of complaints resolved through self-regulation indicates that print and online media are accepting media self-regulation increasingly more.

According to the report of the organization “Freedom House” for 2015, BiH is at the 108th place out of 199 countries, which places it in the category of countries where the media is partially free.

The public campaign was realized in 29 cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Banja Luka, Bihac, Cazin, Gorazde, Sarajevo, Jablanica, East Sarajevo, Zavidovici, Tuzla, Pale, Visoko, Zenica, Rudo, Samac, Travnik, Stolac, Odzak, Visegrad, Kakanj, Jajce, Mostar, Srebrenik, Brcko, Gradiska, Maglaj, Foca, Olovo, Modrica and Kalinovik.

The campaign was supported by the German Embassy in Sarajevo, the National Endowment for Democracy organization (NED) and Civil Rights Defenders (CRD).
